Visconti’s Fortress of Castell’Arquato

Immagine del castello

Built between 1342 and 1349 according to the will of Luchino Visconti, the fortress became property of Scotti family in 1404 and later on of Filippo Visconti. In 1466 passed to Sforza family until 1707, when it was incorporated into the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. Still today the fortress and its towers overlook both the burg and the Arda valley. Made completely of bricks, the building is formed by two connected parts: a lower rectangular shaped enclosure and a smaller one. The whole complex is dominated by the donjon, once pivot of urban defence.
